What Is A Story Session?

A story session is an option for your wedding film, a deeper look into your love story and a day to just be yourself. Wedding days are a beautiful celebration of the journey you've taken to get to the big day. So why not have your film be the same?

In short a story session is a day to do something you and your partner love that's outside of your wedding day. Going to the beach, cooking a meal, playing a sport, etc. all while I'm there to capture it. Sounds intimidating? Just remember that I don't have a film crew coming. It's just me and my camera. Part of telling your story is getting to know you and that happens before we even get to a story session. I do my best to make sure that once we get to the story session, you see me as a friend with a camera not a stranger intruding.

This all starts from the time we have our first meeting. Even before you book I take time to hear who you are and what you're looking for. I don't present film packages without getting to know you because everyone is different. Your package options should reflect your wants and needs.

If you do decide on a package then we'll have a check-in meeting regardless but if your package includes a story session then I'll add an extra check-in or two. If close enough I love to give the option of an in person hangout. These extra check-ins are geared towards understanding what's important to you and your partner. What things are part of your larger love story and what do you want preserved in your film?

Once we have a clear idea, I begin planning. Logistics of where we'll be, when we'll be there and what we're planning to do. A quick example is a story session I did in 2025. The couple had moved to Boston and fell in love with running along the Charles River together. To add to it, there was a beach that meant a great deal to the couple. With that information we went back and forth with ideas. We ended up finding a beautiful park by the same beach that they could go for a run in. Ending the day with games on the beach. Mixing things they love with a place that means something to them. That was the ultimate goal.

Have a special venue and want to include it in your story session? These sessions can be done anytime before your wedding including the night before. Sometimes spending a few slowing down before the big day can be the best way to take it all in.

When it comes to story sessions you have open reign. Think of it like a documentary. I'm not there to tell you what to do, I'm there to film who you two are together. I give direction if needed or wanted but other than that I'm really just hanging out with you. If you ever at any point feel uncomfortable in front of the camera just let me know. Yes I'm there to do a job but I'm also there to respect your space.

So your story session is done, your wedding day has come and gone and now it's time to tie it all together. When using a story session in a film I've already story boarded so that I have a general idea of how it will fit it. However sometimes it's the things you haven't planned that make the best story. Your story comes to life given the time we've spent together, the things said and the emotions felt.
